Biographies

The Verderber family hat well-known and extraordinary, but also totally normal members during the course of the history. Their life, work and family is shown here.

• Michael Verderber (1766–21/12/1843), Johann Verderber (27/4/1793–1871) and the painting behind glass at Außergefild (Bohemia): Michael Verderber, peddler from the Gottschee, founded a workshop for paintings behind glass, and his son Johann continued in great style.
• Thomas Verderber (19/12/1793–13/5/1886) and the Verderber House in Retz (Austria): The Gottscheer pedlar Thomas Verderber founded a merchant’s house in Retz in Lower Austria at the beginning of the 19^th century which is still existing today, and got wealthy.
• Richard Verderber (23/1/1884–8/9/1955), winner of the Olympic Games: Richard Verderber from Gottschee wan the fencing silver and bronze medal for Austria at the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912.
• The Verderbers of Cologne: Between the two World Wars there lived members of the Jewish family branch in Cologne. All except two were murdered during the Third Reich.
• Leo Verderber (1919–2002), the scholar: Leo Verderber, Jewish scholar from Leipzig, survived the concentration camp at Auschwitz and became a High School teacher in the United States of America.
